Binding is the process of compressing chest tissue to produce a flatter appearance. It is most commonly done by transgender men, but also by many people of all gender identities and presentations.
A binder is designed to allow people to bind safely, simply and effectively. They are available in a variety of different lengths, sizes and colours.
Trusted UK retailers:
– Spectrum outfitters
– GC2B
– Trans shop UK
Abingdon Queer Action works with Spectrum Outfitters to provide free binders to local people.
Other ways to create a flatter chest:
- Kinesiology tape (see the description for a link to a specific tutorial).
- High impact sports bra (compression style).
- Baggy clothing, or multiple layers of clothing to disguise body shape.
Do not attempt to bind with unsafe alternative methods like duct tape, compression bandages or a binder that is too small. This can cause serious long term damage (including broken ribs, punctured lungs and heart attacks). If you are struggling to access binding resources in Oxfordshire please contact the Oxfordshire Binder Scheme who can provide you with a proper binder.
Make sure to take binding breaks where possible (never bind for more than 8 hours a day)! And remove your binder to sleep and exercise.
